Rehabilitation and Recovery Near Rochester, MN

Meadow View Veterinary Clinic's Canine Rehabilitation services provides individualized rehabilitation and conditioning programs for canine companions. All services are provided by a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. Our facility features a padded exercise area with Cavaletti, fitness balls and other exercise equipment, cold laser therapy for pain relief and wound/tissue healing, and an underwater treadmill.

Dogs that may benefit from our canine rehab department's services include those that:

  • Are recovering from or are about to undergo planned orthopedic surgery
  • Suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia
  • Are overweight
  • Have arthritis or lameness related to old age
  • Compete in dog shows, obedience, hunting or other sports and could use a competitive edge
  • Need more exercise than what their owners can provide, especially during the winter months

The underwater treadmill utilizes the properties of water to optimize rehabilitation and conditioning sessions based on the individual needs of the dog. Variables can be adjusted to emphasize protected weight bearing to an injured or post operative limb, or to focus on strengthening, range of motion or cardiovascular endurance.

Benefits of exercising via the underwater treadmill include:

Buoyancy:
  • Decreases weight bearing to sore or injured limbs and will allow earlier use of limb in dogs that have had surgery.
  • Allows weak dogs to exercise in an upright position

Resistance of water
  • Helps to strengthen muscle
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness
  • Provides stability for weak or unstable limbs

Hydrostatic pressure
  • Helps reduce swelling in the joints
  • May allow movement with less pain in arthritic or painful limbs

Click on Play to watch Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Bahama, undergo a treadmill session. Bahama underwent shoulder surgery and successfully recovered and returned to action after her rehab. Here, Bahama is gaining strength, endurance and range of motion by working on the underwater treadmill. During her early rehab, the buoyancy of deeper water decreased the stress on her injured joint.

Meadow View Canine Rehab can help get your dog back in the game, whether that game is casual neighborhood walks, playing fetch in the back yard, or serious competition in dog sports such as field trials or agility.
